A bike trip along the coast

As we had a wonderful five days to spend in Mallorca, we rented a bike for three days and cycled along the coast of Mallorca. Mallorca is well-known by cyclists, and especially in the spring season, you will see a lot of cyclists cruising down the roads. You can easily rent your own bike and take it for a spin.

Even if you are not an experienced cyclist it will be an easy ride as the coastline is one long bike path without too many climbs. There are also lots of routes through the hills of Mallorca which will definitely give you a little challenge. We are a more experienced cyclist as we live in the Netherlands where a bike is our first choice of transportation. Therefore, if we have the choice, we will rent a bike to do a little exploring of the area.

The first day we took our bikes along the coast for an easy bike trip along the sea. The cycling lines are very good in Mallorca so you can easily cruse your way along the beaches and the beautiful sea. During your bike ride, you will drive through a few villages that are pretty much grown into Palma. Both Magaluff on the one side and El Arenal on the other side of the island are, as we mentioned before, famous party destinations in Palma.

We took the ride in the direction of El Arenal which is a 20km long cycle path along the coast. We rode our bikes for a few kilometres along the cost and made a few more stops at one of the beaches and bays. Pastilla, for example, is a nice spot to make a stop with lots of restaurants and bars. There is always something to see along the waterline as there are many spots for water sports and windsurfing around this area. Make sure you have enough breath for your ride back to the city and enjoy the sunset while cycling back or just by chilling at one of the beach bars near Palma city.

The second day we took our bike more up the hills to the Poble Espanyol de Mallorca. This village shows 22 excellent replicas in 1:2 scale from prominent Spanish famous buildings: Myrtle Courtyard (Grenada), El Greco’s house (Toledo) and a Castilian Plaza Mayor it (Madrid). It actually feels a little like walking through Granada’s Alhambra Palace. As you have to go up the hills of Palma this would be a more challenging route, so do not say we did not warn you.

The third day we rode our bikes around the city to see the outside skirts of Palma, for example, the Sa Gerreria quarter which we mentioned before. It is a quick and fun way to explore the city so you can see a lot in a short time. After doing a little exploring in Palma we cycled in the direction of the Palma ports and to the small caves of Genova.

There are not too many tourists who will visit this stalactite cave as there are much larger caves on the island of Mallorca. The route of 3km is not less impressive. We especially liked the small restaurants near the cave which served amazing grilled leeks. It sounds quite boring, but leek blackened from the BBQ is one of the juiciest and delicious things ever. The ride to the caves is one with some small climbs, but nothing too hard.

On our way back to Palma we found a quiet little bay sat down and relaxed for a while before handing in our bikes. There are several bike rent stores in Palma and it is a cheap (and healthy) way of exploring the coast and the City of Palma. We rented our bike at Palma On Bikeย at the centre shop and paid around 25 euro to rent our bike for three days. Give it a try and explore the island in a fun way.
