Visit a local market

Athens local market

Alright, we have to admit, we love markets. It’s such a vibrant place. All the fresh meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, and herbs. We just want to buy it all and cook the most amazing dinner. But, we are on a holiday, so we have to do with the smell and the feel of the market some small amounts of herbs, nuts, and fruits.

We were so lucky to discover that the first day in Athens, there was a local market just outside of our apartment (Kalvou street). We love the vibrancy and shouting of the market vendors. Tables full of grapes and melons and the vendors try to get your attention just with everything they have. Hitting pans, shouting or singing, as long as you will take a look. There are several markets in Athens, so we advise to check google if there is one in the area on the day that you will visit Athens because it is definitely worth it.

We also visited the MonastirΓ‘ki Flea market, but the flea market is nothing more than a street full of small touristic shops, lots of leather shops and one or two antique stores.

Unfortunately, we did not visit the Athens Central Market (Varvakeios), but this would definitely be one our list for our next trip. So if you love markets, be sure to visit the central market.
